After a full month of fasting and self-control, Muslims celebrate Idul Fitri (more commonly referred to in Indonesia as Lebaran) to marks the end of Ramadan. The day falls on ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar and fall on different days across regions, depend on the sighting of the crescent moon. Idul Fitri begins with mass prayer gatherings early in the morning at mosques, open fields, parks and on major streets. Also, it is the time to visit family and friends to ask for forgiveness for any wrongs that have committed in the previous year, it's called Mudik
The term mudik refers to the exodus of millions of Indonesians from the larger cities (particularly Jakarta) back to their hometowns in the regions to celebrate Idul Fitri with their families (in fact also non-Muslims follow this tradition). Traditionally, people start to mudik three or four days ahead of Idul Fitri starting from 1st April 2025
