NYEPI DAY
Nyepi is an important Hindu holiday in Bali, usually called the ‘Day of Silence’. It is held at the start of the Balinese year, usually in March.
Nyepi is a public holiday in Indonesia, and most locals observe it by practicing silence, fasting, and meditation. Silence, fasting and meditation allow the devout to engage in self-introspection. This generally means that any activity that might distract this process is prohibited.
This explains why the locals do not work, travel, or entertain during the Balinese New Year celebrations. Visitors to Bali during this time will encounter deserted streets, empty entertainment venues, and quiet neighborhoods.
Nyepi this year will fall on 29 March 2025 starting on 6 a.m until 6 a.m on the next day. Visitors fortunate enough to be on Bali during Nyepi will have the opportunity to experience this unique, magical and fascinating celebration and join the Balinese in reflecting on the past year in silence and start with new and positive intentions. The evening before Nyepi, you may find a parade through the streets of Bali with locals carrying large Ogoh-Ogoh statues. Don’s miss it while on Bali!
